America Mendoza: Eureka Fellow, Mom, and Future Pediatric Nurse

A current Eureka fellow, mom, and aspiring nurse, America Mendoza is making moves and giving back to the community along the way. We sat down for a quick Q+A to learn more about her GIMD journey, her goals, and what advice she has for girls thinking about joining.

Q: Hi America! How old are you and what’s your connection to Girls Inc. of Metro Denver?
America: I’m 24 and currently a fellow with the Eureka program. We meet a couple of times a month, go on field trips, and I get to spend time with the girls and connect more deeply. It’s been amazing!

Q: What do you love most about the Eureka program?
America: The community. It’s so welcoming and understanding. There was even a time I had to bring my son with me—and no one made me feel out of place for that. Everyone is just so supportive.

Q: What was your favorite GIMD activity?
America: Definitely the science lab with Ms. Kendra! That was the best.

Q: What have you learned through GIMD that’s stuck with you?
America: Communication and community. I’ve become a much better communicator, and I’ve really learned what it means to be part of a community.

Q: Why should girls join Girls Inc. of Metro Denver?
America: Because it’s an amazing program. It’s a safe space where everyone is kind, and you can just be yourself. Plus, you’ll make so many friends along the way.

Q: How has Girls Inc. helped you prepare for your future?
America: It’s helped me feel more confident about my goals and given me the support to keep pushing forward. I even started thinking about working at GIMD someday!

Q: Love that! So what’s your dream job?
America: I’ve always wanted to be a nurse, but now I know I want to be a pediatric nurse. I hope to go back to school and make that dream happen.

Q: What advice would you give to other girls thinking about joining GIMD?
America: Just do it! Seriously. It’s a great place where you can be yourself, feel supported, and grow in ways you didn’t expect.

Q: And what do you do when you’re not at GIMD?
America: I’m a mom! So most of my time is spent with my son, which I love.

We’re so proud to have incredible fellows like America in our community. Her passion, drive, and warmth make her a role model for girls everywhere. Stay bold, America—we’re cheering you on every step of the way!
