“Being enrolled in the Eureka! Program has made me become a person I am proud of, and I trust myself that I can do anything.”
We feel the energy and presence of our girls the moment they step through our doors.
In fact, when we met up with Eureka! Program graduate Ana Neri in the Girls Inc. of Metro Denver lobby, we quickly discovered just how many of our staff members immediately recognized her warm embrace. Her teachers smiled and hugged her before asking her about how she plans to remain plugged into Girls Inc, and others wondered what her experience had been as a college student at Red Rocks Community College – where she is currently pursuing an associate’s degree in criminal justice.
“This semester, I got two A’s and 3 B’s,” she told us with a big smile.
As a Eurekan, Ana had the opportunity to engage in various activities that opened her eyes to the world of STEM. Throughout the program, she became less nervous and shy and became more outgoing, helping her to build up a tremendous amount of confidence. Her Eureka! Program journey also took her on field trips to places like United Airlines, where she got to speak with female pilots and learn more about science and engineering.
And while she didn’t choose to pursue a STEM career, Ana didn’t hesitate when we asked her how her time in the program has helped her on her pathway to becoming a police officer – something she has dreamed about being since she was a little girl.
“We need more females of color to become police officers,” she told us. “And when I think of what the Eureka! Program has taught me, the first thing I think of is patience, something that I know will help me as a future police officer. I also learned how to communicate with others by understanding their wants and needs.”
The Eureka! Program pushed Ana out of her comfort zone, creating more opportunities for her to take full advantage of the program’s offerings. From camp and fun classes to lifelong relationships and transferable skills, Ana has never been more prepared to jump into a career in service to her community – especially because the program assists girls with landing internships that align with their interests.
Outside of her studies, Ana loves to play video games and is actively working on the publication of a dystopian book, inspired by a character she created from a Harry Potter-themed game. She is also a fan of sci-fi movies and has developed a passion for archaeology and ancient history.
As we neared the end of our time together, we asked Ana what advice she would give to girls who are interested in enrolling in the Eureka! Program, and she shared how important it is to not be afraid to be yourself.
“It’s okay to not feel very outgoing at first or have many friends,” she admitted. “Over the years, you’ll be able to learn more about yourself and how to love yourself. Get to know other people who have the same interests as you and you’ll gain friendships and skills that can help you throughout your future.”
As for Ana, it’s safe to say her future is a little brighter after five amazing years in a program that has encouraged growth in ways that will last a lifetime.
